Heart Garlands

Heart Garlands In-Person

Join artist Mary Ann Rainey for this 2 day workshop where participants will learn the process of creating Formline designs using felt. During the workshop attendees will cut, sew, and bead a single Formline heart using two colors of felt. Following the creation of the heart, participants will have the opportunity to continue adding to their project, crafting a personalized heart garland. This class is for adults open to all skill levels, and no prior experience is necessary to join in on this hands-on exploration of Tlingít art.

Mary Ann Rainey is a Tlingít regalia artist. She began her artists journey with a desire to create regalia for her 18 grandchildren, as a way to pass on the knowledge and pride in their Tlingít heritage.  She began by learning to cut, sew, and bead Formline using felt to create traditional button blankets and graduation stoles.  She is renowned for these hand sewn works of art and is also accomplished in the arts of beading, cedar bark weaving, Ravenstail weaving, and skin sewing. Mary Ann is a prolific artist who thrives on learning the artistic forms of her own culture as well as those of other First Nations People. Mary Ann’s art work can be found for sale locally at Octoberfest and other craft fairs.
